On Friday, March 13, Friends of City Park will hold its annual Lark in the Park Gala. A few months before Hurricane Katrina in 2005, City Park officials launched an ambitious plan to revamp the park in time for the city’s 300th anniversary in 2018. Of course, no one could have imagined the hurricane’s devastating impact on the city and surrounding areas, not to mention City Park.
Amazingly, City Park’s transformation remains in effect thanks to the support of individuals, organizations, and charitable events like Lark in the Park. This year, our restaurant, Criollo, is participating in the gala, preparing sumptuous short ribs sure to delight guests. Carousel Bar will also bring along its Flying Horses cocktail.
If you can’t make it to the gala, our hotel offers a similar experience – we’ve got live jazz in our Carousel Bar & Lounge, not to mention Criollo favorites like crawfish bisque and grilled filet of beef Rossini.
We also recommend journeying to City Park to experience acres upon acres of sprawling green space, a world-class art museum, and even a mini theme park! Check out our favorite things to do at City Park below:
Explore New Orleans Museum of Art & Besthoff Sculpture Garden
Founded in 1911, this museum, known as NOMA, is one of the premier art museums in the country. You’ll find an impressive permanent collection plus rotating exhibits from artists like Edward Degas. Visitors can also enjoy the “Friday Nights at NOMA” series featuring live music entertainment (it’s free with the price of admission). Additionally, there’s a free, on-site sculpture garden where you can admire contemporary sculptures amid City Park’s characteristic lagoons and oak trees.
Enjoy a Gondola Ride
Venice, New Orleans-style. The gondola rides through the lagoons of City Park are an unforgettable experience, whether you choose to go romantic with your sweetheart or arrange a fun ride with your family or friends. Nola Gondola mimics the Italian experience with included wine and Italian music as part of your ride.
Head to Storyland
Fairytales come to life at Storyland, where visitors can find attractions based on classic tales like Peter Pan, Cinderella, and The Three Little Pigs. In the same area, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park (not to be confused with our Carousel Bar & Lounge, of course!) offers rides like a Ferris Wheel, bumper cars, and Tilt-A-Whirl, plus carnival favorites like funnel cake and popcorn.
