While you may be familiar with the world-famous running of the bulls that takes place each summer in Pamplona, Spain, did you know that New Orleans has its own version? This year marks the 10th anniversary of San Fermin en Nueva Orleans. The festivities take place Friday, July 8 through Sunday, July 10, 2016 in downtown New Orleans. Planning a trip to New Orleans to join the fun? Here’s what you should know: In New Orleans, the “bulls” are rollergirls. The main difference between the Crescent City’s version of the Encierro and the orignal Spanish version? Here in NOLA, instead of actual bulls, thousands of runners are chased by roller derby skaters, known as Rollerbulls. While the event started with local skaters from the Big Easy Rollergirls, New Orleans’ all-female flat-track derby team, San Fermin en Nueva Orleans now also welcomes skaters from roller derby leagues around the world. Skaters adorn their helmets with horns and carry plastic bats to terrorize the runners with. San Fermin en Nueva Orleans is a full weekend of fun. The main event takes place on the morning of Saturday, July 9, 2016, but there are festivities all weekend long. A kick-off party takes place Friday night, July 8, from 5-9pm at Little Gem Saloon (445 S. Rampart Street) and features an open bar, food, a silent auction, and live music from Los Poboycitos. Which is why Tales of the Cocktail, a festival-meets-convention, is the perfect way to celebrate our favorite kind of drink. Founded in 2002, the event brings together the world’s top mixologists, bartenders, and chefs for five days full of cuisine, culture, and most importantly – cocktails. We are thrilled to be the official host hotel of what has become one of the biggest events of the New Orleans summer. This festival takes place July 19-24, 2016 and includes a series of seminars, mixing competitions, networking opportunities and other spirited events. In addition to Fourth of July celebrations, New Orleans also features an event on the third of July, plus, of course, there’s ESSENCE Fest all weekend long. With the festivities happening over a long holiday weekend, you can guarantee it will come with all the typical French Quarter fanfare. Here’s the scoop on what to see and do during 4th of July weekend 2016 in New Orleans: Go 4th on the River Every year, New Orleans goes all out with a fireworks display that begins at 9:00pm on Monday, July 4th and usually lasts 15-20 minutes. The annual fireworks show has consistently been rated as one of the best fireworks displays in the country. You can walk from our doors down to the riverfront and view a spectacular fireworks display launched from dueling barges on the Mississippi River. It can be viewed from either side of the river. For optimal viewing on the French Quarter side, head to Woldenberg Park in between Spanish Plaza and the Governor Nicholls Street Wharf.
