Dating all the way back to 1856, the plantation is a national landmark and the only authentically restored plantation in Louisiana. The unusual name “San Francisco” is believed to be derived from a previous owner’s comment about the extraordinary debt he was confronted with when taking over the estate. He declared he was sans fruscins or “without a penny in my pocket.” The name evolved into St. Frusquin and, in 1879, was changed into “San Francisco” by the next owner, Achille D. Bougère.

Closed only a handful of holidays per year, no matter when you’re in town the San Francisco Plantation will be ready for you to visit. Period-dressed historic interpreters lead tours daily that begin every 20 minutes. After experiencing one of the awe-inspiring 45 minute tours, you will have visited all 14 rooms of the plantation, witnessed five magnificent hand painted ceilings and classic wood working known as false marbling, and traipsed through the gorgeous grounds.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7 of this year, San Francsico Plantation will hold the 7th Annual Frisco Festival. Fun for people of all ages and interests, events include over 100 arts and crafts exhibits, music by Geno Delafose & French Rockin Boogie Band, a kids activity area, Creole and Cajun Food, a chef’s choice cook-off and open car show. If being active outdoors is more to your liking then feel free to participate in the 1 mile Fun Run, 5 K race, or the 25 mile bike tour.

Tipitina’s French Quarter

The newer Tip’s, located at 233 N. Peters, is a beautiful offspring of the original legendary club. Its setting in the historic French Quarter makes the music played there, that much more enjoyable. This live music hotspot boasts the best of French Quarter ambiance coupled with a view of the Mississippi River. Within walking distance of the Morial Convention Center and most hotels Tips is great for seated dinners, receptions, luncheons, seminars and concerts.

Tipitina’s began as a neighborhood juke joint, established in 1977, by a group of young music fans (The Fabulous Fo’teen) to provide a place for Professor Longhair to perform in his final years. The venue, named for one of Longhair’s most enigmatic recordings “Tipitina,” has survived in an ever-changing musical climate despite changing ownership and briefly closing in 1984. In the past 25 years, Tipitina’s has grown from a small, neighborhood bar into an international music icon. The venue has expanded into a two-story, 1,000 capacity music venue located at the famed corner of Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas. Tipitina’s now has resources such as a web site, recording studio, record label, and a dynamic special events department.

Within the beautiful building, Tip’s first floor has a 500 person capcity Reception Style room (equipped with a large stage state of the art sound and light system) and a spacious 500 Reception Style capacity private party room upstairs with hardwood floors and a view of the Mississippi River. In addition, Tips’ French Quarter can do an elegant-to-casual 250-person sitdown dinner in its upstairs room and a 200-person dinner of the same ilk in its downstairs room.

Numerous artists famous to both New Orleans and the world have taken the stage at Tipitina’s and continue to do so. This list includes Dr. John, the Neville Brothers, the Meters, Cowboy Mouth, the Radiators, Galactic, Better Than Ezra, Wilco, Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, Lenny Kravitz, Bonnie Raitt, James Brown, Widespread Panic, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tim McGraw, Goo Goo Dolls, Parliament Funkadelic, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, and Medeski, and Martin & Wood.

A visit to both the Hermann-Grima house and Gallier House will give you a glimpse into the elegant lifestyle in the Viex Carré of prosperous Creole families pre Civil War. While walking through this meticulously restored residence, you will also experience the Golden Age of New Orleans and really gain a feeling of that time. The overall Mission of the Museum is “to preserve, maintain, and complete the restoration of the Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses and properties, to interpret their place in and contribution to the culture of New Orleans, and to educate visitors about the history of New Orleans and its population in the period from 1830 to 1880.” This is exactly what to expect after visiting these historic properties.

HERMANN-GRIMA HOUSE
820 Saint Louis Street

The Hermann-Grima House is one of the most significant residences in New Orleans. Dating back to its construction in 1831, this property boasts a unique existence as a handsome Federal mansion with its courtyard garden the uniquely holds a horse stable and functional 1830s outdoor kitchen all within the French Quarter. Painstakingly restored to its original splendor through archaeological studies and careful review of the building contract and inventories, the museum complex accurately depicts the gracious lifestyle of a prosperous Creole family in the years from 1830 to 1860.

GALLIER HOUSE
1132 Royal Street

The Gallier House was designed by a prominent New Orleans architect in the mid-19th century with the same name- James Gallier, Jr. In 1857 Mr. Gallier decided to reap the benefits of his own talent when he designed a residence of his own. His creation is currently an outstanding example of accurate and comprehensive historic restoration of one of New Orleans’ loveliest and time-honored landmarks. Take a stroll through the Gallier House and experience the historically furnished home with elaborate garden, elegant carriageway, and restored slave quarters.

Come learn the story of historic New Orleans! The wax recounts 300 years of history from the city’s founding to present day. Founded in 1963, this 3rd generation, family owned and operated business is a New Orleans treasure chest of history, legend and scandal. The WAX building, built in 1890, exemplifies turn of the century French Quarter architecture with its spot sandblasted brick walls, cypress windows, original heartwood pine floors, exposed wooden white-washed beams with indirect lighting and a skylight for accent.

Unlike other wax museums, The Musée Conti Wax Museum tells the story of one city alone, and what a story it is! From our city’s fair founding, to the legendary Battle of New Orleans, to the mysterious world of Voodoo. New Orleans’ unique history is recounted through 154 life-size figures sculpted in wax, and displayed in historically accurate settings. The Haunted Dungeon is also a sight to see if you won’t be scared by such a place!

Private parties and group tours are welcome at the WAX. The WAX can accommodate up to 300 for seated dinners & 500 for standing cocktail. Special event guests will be greeted by two costumed tour guides, a three piece Jazz combo strumming excitedly in the lobby, wait staff passing hors d’oeuvres and bartenders pouring liquor of your preference. Guests are also invited to wander through the mysterious halls of the museum! If you are looking for a unique type of party or just a fun and informative day with a New Orleans theme, then the WAX is the perfect place for you!

Republic New Orleans, an elegant cabaret-style music lounge, is known for its constantly evolving entertainment through music, fashion, film and the arts. With several different spaces including mezzanine levels, the space can accommodate groups ranging from 10 to 650 comfortably.

A Brief History of The Republic

The turn-of-the-century building was originally used as a holding facility for coffee being exported via the Mississippi River, located just yards away. The space sat dormant for years, preserved as if in a time capsule. The venue was finally revived as a part of the “Australian Pavilion” for the 1984 World’s Fair. Shortly thereafter, Oliver Stone took his turn with the building, developing it into a set for his critically acclaimed “JFK,” which was based and filmed partly in New Orleans. Thereafter, the space became a bastion for rock music, hosting bands such as the Foo Fighters, Better Than Ezra, and The Strokes.

Press

“With a slight polish in a city known and loved for its faded glory, Republic is breathing new life into the Not So Big Easy by bringing in big national acts, and hosting film nights, fashion events, and themed parties.”

The Foundry is Bella Luna Catering’s special events venue located just one block from the Convention Center. Housed in a renovated 19th-century warehouse, the flexible space dazzles with its historic bricking and exposed wooden beams two feet thick that rise more than 14 feet from the concrete floor to the wooden ceiling beams. A warm and inviting atmosphere, this is a place with its very own personality, evoking the romance of the Mississippi River in the era of steamboats and horse-drawn wagons. It occupies the ground floor of of the warehouse with. Wooden columns,. Exposed brick, bearing the patina of many decades, form much of the corner building’s walls, one of them partly covered by a mural depicting a quaint French Quarter courtyard scene.

From elaborate cocktail receptions to delicious continental breakfasts to formal, seated five-course dinners, The Foundry will make your event unique and memorable.

A Brief History of The Foundry

The site of The Foundry dates back to 1719. Governor Bienville, one of the founders of this area, owned the land originally. He then sold the property to the Order of the Jesuits, who owned the property from 1726-1763. That year new owner Marie Saulier Depleiss bought the land for the construction of a plantation and outbuildings. The property, with its plantation structures had several owners until 1831 when Louise Poeyferre sold off lots on the land for the construction of small buildings.

1859-1881 lent the “Foundry” property to become a small brewery operated by the Fasacht Brothers. In 1881 new owners, the Maginnis family had the plantation house torn down for the erection of the first cotton mill on this site. It remained a cotton mill until 1894, when the property was sold to George Pratt for the construction of Citizen’s Bank. In 1947, the site became home to the first of several glass companies. The property was sold in 1985 to a machine manufacturing company. In 2001 the former plantation site became the new home of Bella Luna Catering, “The Foundry.”

Cats first opened its doors in December of 1989 as one of the first bars to provide karaoke as night time entertainment. Instantly, Cats created a phenomenon. Pioneer, the audio company responsible for bringing Karaoke to the United States, gave Cats the title of “the best karaoke bar in the world!” only two years after its opening.

Cats remains so successful because of its exceptional concept: live DJs and emcees, a variety of fun and memorable music, and the surprise as to who the next performer will be!

John Autin

Pianist, vocalist, producer, songwriter John Autin is one of New Orleans’ musical treasures. For years, John Autin has been one of New Orleans finest pianists playing or recording with Luther Kent, Marva Wright, Snooks Eaglin, Ernie K. Doe, Tommy Ridgley, Oliver Morgan, Irma Thomas, Eddie Bo, George Porter, Jr., Anders Osborne, Nora Wixted, Timothea, Grace Darling, Brian Lee, Wanda Rouzan, Al Miller, Jeff Chaz, Theresa Andersson, Irene Sage, Big Daddy ‘O’. John has also produced CD’s for many of these artists and others on the Rabadash Records label.

Don Vappie

Born in New Orleans, Don’s versatile background of playing funk, rhythm and blues, and pop music enhances his unique perspective on music and performance. In addition to his work as a producer, composer and arranger, Don has performed/recorded with Terence Blanchard, Benny Waters, Doc Cheathum, Peggy Lee and continues to be a regular guest with Wynton Marsalis and The J@LC Orchestra as well as guest artist at numerous festivals and venues worldwide.

Cindy Scott

She has walked a different path than the average jazz singer. She has a Masters in International Business and speaks German and Spanish. She lived and worked abroad for years in places like Hungary and Mexico. She and husband Bill Fernandez competed for a house on TBS’ reality TV series House Rules – and won! She moved to New Orleans just in time to lose everything to the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. She earned her second Masters (in Jazz Studies) from the University of New Orleans, a program founded by famed educator Ellis Marsalis and now led by guitar icon Steve Masakowski. She traded a successful corporate career for the crazy life of a jazz musician – and she never looked back!

Cherie Mannino

In a city of transplants and wannabe locals, Cerie Mannino is a true New Orleans native. Born and raised in the lower Ninth Ward with the mighty Mississippi River literally in her backyard. She comes from three generations of shipbuilders and riverboat pilots. The river, the essence of the city, is in her blood. Over the past twenty years her singing career in Los Angeles and New Orleans has put her on stage backing up Rosemary Clooney, Linda Ronstadt and Keely Smith. As a solo artist Cherie has won awards at numerous jazz competitions and has performed at the NO Jazz ad Heritage Festival. Cherie’s vast and varied repertoire includes Blues, Rock, Swing, New Orleans classics, and quite a collection of burning big band arrangements, yet her true passion is Jazz. In her approach to a standard tune, a perceptive listener may catch the influence of Ella Fitzgerald, or Nancy Wilson in her clear tone and purposeful delivery. Her expressive, natural phrasings have an easy, conversational quality reminiscent of Billy Holiday or maybe Tony Bennett. Cherie headlines with various groups at music hot spots in and around New Orleans. Cherie’s vibrant singing style is a true delight for jazz fans. Cherie’s voice is powerful, yet versatile, controlled, yet never loses it’s ability to surprise, which is what makes a voice, a fine jazz voice.

Big Daddy ‘O’

Big Daddy ‘O’ is one of those rare blues finds. For more than thirty years he has been playing in roadhouses and bars in the delta area near the Louisiana/Mississippi border. Rabadash Records “discovered” Big Daddy ‘O’ playing at small bar in Amite, Louisiana. His approach to performing songs makes each song sound like his own, and everyone who has the pleasure of hearing him loves his big beautiful voice and good-natured presentation. At 6′6″, he has a strong presence on stage that no one forgets. He performs as a solo act as well as with his band, “The Big Daddy ‘O’ Revue.”

Leroy Jones & Tom McDermott

Heavily influenced by the New Orleans jazz tradition, Leroy Jones has honored his rich heritage while seeking to expand his musical repertoire. He took up trumpet when he joined his elementary school’s band. At 13, he joined guitarist Danny Barker’s Fairview Baptist Brass Band, who also taught Jones privately. He spent four years in the city’s popular St. Augustine High School Band. After graduating, he formed the Hurricane Brass Band, which along with the Fairview Band provided talent for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. He toured Canada with Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and joined Della Reese, leading to international concert tours that eventually resulted in Jones performing in Southeast Asia for a three-year stretch. Recruited by Harry Connick, Jr. for his big band, Jones was Connick’s opening act during his 1994 tour. He finally debuted to critical acclaim as a leader in 1995 with his CD Mo’ Cream From the Crop.

Tom McDermott was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 24, 1957. He soaked up that town’s ragtime heritage, learning dozens of rags and issuing an LP of originals (“New Rags”, Stomp Off Records, 1982). After earning a Master’s Degree in music from Washington University and working two years for the morning paper as a jazz and rock critic, McDermott headed downriver in 1984 to New Orleans.

In Louisiana, he has explored the styles of New Orleans masters like Jelly Roll Morton, Professor Longhair and James Booker. As a soloist he is in demand as one of the few pianists in town comfortable with the Crescent City’s traditional jazz and R&B styles.

Jon Cleary

He is a funk and R&B musician based in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is from Cranbrook in Kent, England, and has studied for the past 20 years the “musical culture and life of New Orleans,” according to his website. Cleary is an accomplished pianist, vocalist and song-writer.

Jon Cleary performs with a number of music luminaries including Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, B.B. King, Ryan Adams, and Eric Burdon. Compositions by Cleary have been recorded by notable musicians including Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt and most recently John Scofield on his album, Piety Street.

Cleary’s current band is Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, who have two current albums. Cleary has three solo albums.

Sam Broussard

Sam Broussard was signed to Capitol Records in 1971 as part of the adventurous acoustic quartet of Louisiana boys called Manchild, which also included Bourgeois endorser David Bankston. As a teenager he shared the stage with the likes of Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee and Dave Van Ronk. He went on to do studio and roadwork with Michael Martin Murphey, Nicolette Larson, Foster and Lloyd, Jimmy Buffett and countless others during his stay in Nashville. During his Colorado days he often played with Robben Ford: “I kept up with him a few times.” In the mid-90’s he toured Europe, recording, filming and writing with million-selling franco-swiss star Stephan Eicher.

Mitch Woods & Bill Malchow

Mitch Woods is an American modern day boogie-woogie, jump blues and jazz pianist and singer. Since the early 1980s he has been touring and recording with his band, the Rocket 88s. Woods calls his music, “rock-a-boogie,” and with his backing band has retrospectively provided a 1940s and 1950s jump blues style.

Roots pianist and vocalist Bill Malchow divides his time between the Big Apple and the Big Easy—which sounds about right, since his percolating, second-line style bubbles and boils with Fats Waller-style Harlem stride and the steaming New Orleans sounds of Dr. John, James Booker, Allen Toussaint, and Professor Longhair.

Lindsay Mendez

Recently signed by RABADASH RECORDS in New Orleans, Lindsay became the youngest artist (13) to ever sign with the Label. Lindsay has a very impressive resume’ at such a young age. Her National Anthem performances has landed her in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, TN., the New Orleans Hornets NBA Team, The New Orleans Zephyrs AAA MLB Team, and every Major college in South Louisiana, as well as private functions throughout the Southeastern United States. She has performed with such bands as Irma Thomas and the Professionals, Vince Vance and the Valiants, Bobby Cure and the Summertime Blues, The Wise Guys, Big Daddy O, Waylon Thibodeaux, and many others.

John “Papa” Gros

John “Papa” Gros’ debut CD, Day’s End, described by Keith Spera (New Orleans Times-Picayune) as “bits of Leon Russell, Dr. John, and Little Feat plus a whole lot of John Gros” is a promisingly fresh look at New Orleans music.

Born in New Orleans and raised in Baton Rouge, Gros studied French horn and jazz piano at Loyola University. In 1996, he joined George Porter Jr.’s band, Runnin’ Pardners where he honed his New Orleans piano and organ skills, paying great homage to Dr. John and Art Neville. In 2000, John founded the all-star funk conglomerate, Papa Grows Funk.

From FRIDAY, April 23 thru SUNDAY, May 2
