A visit to both the Hermann-Grima house and Gallier House will give you a glimpse into the elegant lifestyle in the Viex Carre of prosperous Creole families pre Civil War. While walking through this meticulously restored residence, you will also experience the Golden Age of New Orleans and really gain a feeling of that time. The overall Mission of the Museum is “to preserve, maintain, and complete the restoration of the Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses and properties, to interpret their place in and contribution to the culture of New Orleans, and to educate visitors about the history of New Orleans and its population in the period from 1830 to 1880.” This is exactly what to expect after visiting these historic properties.

HERMANN-GRIMA HOUSE
820 Saint Louis Street

The Hermann-Grima House is one of the most significant residences in New Orleans. Dating back to its construction in 1831, this property boasts a unique existence as a handsome Federal mansion with its courtyard garden the uniquely holds a horse stable and functional 1830s outdoor kitchen all within the French Quarter. Painstakingly restored to its original splendor through archaeological studies and careful review of the building contract and inventories, the museum complex accurately depicts the gracious lifestyle of a prosperous Creole family in the years from 1830 to 1860.

1132 Royal Street

The Gallier House was designed by a prominent New Orleans architect in the mid-19th century with the same name- James Gallier, Jr. In 1857 Mr. Gallier decided to reap the benefits of his own talent when he designed a residence of his own. His creation is currently an outstanding example of accurate and comprehensive historic restoration of one of New Orleans’ loveliest and time-honored landmarks. Take a stroll through the Gallier House and experience the historically furnished home with elaborate garden, elegant carriageway, and restored slave quarters.
