Latrobe’s on Royal began its stunning history as La Banque de L’Etat de la Louisiane, or the Louisiana State Bank. The building was designed by the “Father of American architecture” Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1820 while a man by the name of Benjamin Fox executed Latrobe’s architectural plans and completed the construction of the State Bank building in 1822. The Louisiana State Bank retained ownership of the structure until it lost its charter in 1870. Until the early 1930s, several different commercial enterprises occupied the building. Bernard Manheim then leased it for use as an antiques gallery. On May 4, 1983, the building was designated as an historic landmark gaining its position in the National Register of Historic Places. The property remained in the Manheim family until the present owners purchased the building and began the latest renovation.
Currently, Latrobe’s on Royal is one of New Orleans’ most architecturally significant buildings, located in the heart of the enchanting French Quarter. Immediately after laying eyes on Latrobe’s you cannot help but be in awe of this building’s beauty. With wrought-iron balconies that feature the LSB cartouche of the Louisiana State Bank, the stucco brick exterior, the hand-wrought iron hardware, and cypress woodwork throughout the building, the antiquity and uniqueness of Latrobe’s is highly evident. After the formely open courtyard was enclosed during a renovation in the late 19th century, Latrobe’s expanded to 7,000 square feet of first floor interior space. There is also a second floor in this venue which is now a 4,000 square foot private residence. This stunning architectural detail and sophisticated amenities, the historic glamour of this location emanates from the building.
Latrobe’s on Royal is perfect for any event calling for a beautiful venue. Visit Latrobe’s on Royal at the corner of Royal and Conti Streets and allow your imagination to take you back to the golden age of New Orleans when she was known as the “Queen City of the South”.
