Nottoway has been referred to as the “American Castle.” It was built in 1859 by a wealthy Virginia planter named John Hampden Randolph for his wife, Emily Jane, and their eleven children. The price tag to build the Plantation at the edge of the sugarcane field estimated $80,000. It has 64 rooms in its three floors, six interior staircases, three modern bathrooms, 22 massive square columns, 165 doors and 200 windows.
Nottoway is the largest remaining antebellum mansion in the Southern United States and splendidly rests along Louisiana’s Great River Road in White Castle, at the heart of Plantation Country.
During Nottoway’s heyday it was known for its many innovations used in the plantation. These innovations include a system of “intercom” bells which summoned servants to specific rooms, a gas plant providing lighting throughout the grounds, and a bowling alley was installed for the children inside the home. The home also had fancy chamber pots (flushing toilets) and hot and cold running water in all bathrooms. All of these innovations where not only unheard of at the time but it is what made Nottoway such a unique place to visit.
Nottoway is a member of the Plantation Parade Association, promoting the grand heritage of plantations along the River Road, along with The Cabin Restaurant, Houmas House, Laura Plantation, Oak Alley Plantation, St. Joseph Plantation, and San Francisco Plantation.
