Ready, Set, Satire! Krewe du Vieux and krewedelusion Mardi Gras Parades

Many Mardi Gras parades happen Uptown, but one of our favorites – Krewe du Vieux – calls our French Quarter neighborhood home.

The Krewe du Vieux parade is all about satire, and while some of its adult themes are enough to make you blush, we can still share the basics of this raunchy krewe.

Krewe du Vieux

Krewe du Vieux is the traditional kick-off of the Mardi Gras parade season. The krewe is comprised of multiple sub-krewes, all of whom provide scathing satire of subjects like the government and pop culture. It’s best to leave the little ones at home for this adult-themed parade.

Unlike other parades with predictable throws like beads or cups, Krewe du Vieux prefers an element of surprise. Past year’s throws have included plastic cockroaches and NSFW temporary tattoos – all in good fun, of course!

In 2017, New Orleans cartoonist and music writer Bunny Matthews will reign as king. The parade route starts in the Marigny at Franklin and Royal Street and winds through the French Quarter and Central Business District.

Don’t miss their parade on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. – and be sure to grab a drink at The Carousel Bar beforehand for a little liquid courage.

Lagniappe: Krewedelusion

Krewedelusion is another satirical Krewe, so their position directly following Krewe du Vieux makes perfect sense! Delusion keeps its theme a secret until the day of the parade, but you can bet that the lampooning of topics like politics will be part of the show.

This year marks Delusion’s 8th parade, and in a break from Carnival tradition, there will be no “Benevolent Ruler” or monarch crowned for this year’s parade.
