While New Orleans’ roots may be French, Spanish influence is woven into the city’s cultural fabric as well, a reminder of the diverse and layered history still resonating. Even much of the renowned architecture of the French Quarter is Spanish Colonial! In July, New Orleans pays tribute to its Spanish heritage with its own take on Pamplona’s famous San FermÃn Festival. Pamplona’s event closes a half mile of downtown streets, where people gather donning white outfits with red accents to watch brave runners race alongside 6-10 bulls and steers. Modeled after this event, New Orleans’ Running with the Bulls replaces actual bulls with daring roller derby skaters dashing through French Quarter streets. For those seeking a more cautious perspective, admire the spectacle from a picturesque balcony overlooking the action.
