Tales of the Cocktail Special Menu

Traveling to New Orleans for this year’s Tales of the Cocktail? Wise move! Hotel Monteleone is proud to be the host hotel for the 12th annual spirits industry event. Check out the cocktails below that will be pulled from the Carousel Bar treasury, for a special Tales of the Cocktail menu!

Harvey Wallbanger cocktail

Harvey Wallbanger

The Harvey Wallbanger was created in the 1950s by three-time world champion mixologist Donato ‘Duke’ Antone. It’s believed to be named after a Manhattan Beach surfer and regular named Tom Harvey.

Ingredients: Absolut Vodka, Orange juice, Galliano

Vieux Carre Cocktail

VIEUX CARRE

This signature cocktail of the famous Carousel Bar was first mixed by Walter Bergeron in 1938.

Ingredients: Bulleit Rye Whiskey, Hennessey, Sweet Vermouth, Benedictine, Angostura & Peychaud’s Bitters

COINTREAU RICKEY

In 1883, Colonel Joe Rickey was believed to have invented the “Joe Rickey” after celebrating his wager on the successful rise of John G. Carlisle to Speaker of the House.

Ingredients: Cointreau, Lime Juice, Soda

KING’S ROYALE

Created by Berry Bros. in 1903 for King Edward VII, this liqueur was formulated to rejuvenate His Majesty during morning rides in his Daimler.

Ingredients: King’s Ginger, Courvoisier, Orange Bitter, Champagne

STINGER

This pre-prohibition cocktail was mentioned in Tom Bullock’s 1917 book, Ideal Bartender. Its popularity grew when Reginald Vanderbilt began ordering it before his meals at The Colony.

Ingredients: Brandy, White Crème De Menthe

New Orleans Perfect Storm

OLD NEW ORLEANS PERFECT STORM

Our take on a Dark & Stormy, this cocktail was created more than a century ago by Bermuda’s Royal Naval Officer’s Club, who added rum to their ginger beer. Ginger helped combat seasickness, lime was added to ward off scurvy, and rum does its usual trick.

Ingredients: Old New Orleans Spice Rum, Ginger Beer, Lime

FRESH GIMLET

Admiral Albert Gleaves of the United States Navy mentioned that while on a visit to Tientsin, China in September of 1920, “… I was served a new drink called gimlet”

Ingredients: Fords’ Gin, Lime Juice, Simple Syrup

CUBA LIBRE

The Cuba Libre cocktail was created in Havana, Cuba, in August 1900 with the help of Captain Russell of the U.S. Army. In celebration of a free Cuba he ordered this cocktail and toasted “Por Cuba libre!”

Ingredients: Plantation Rum, Coke

LIME DAIQUIRI

Jennings Cox, an American mining engineer, created this cocktail around 1905 in the small town of Daiquiri near Santiago on the southeast coast of Cuba.

Ingredients: Cana Brava Rum, Lime Juice, Simple Syrup

ALEXANDER

This cocktail made its first printed appearance in the 1915 book, Recipes for Mixed Drinks by Hugo Ensslin. It’s believed to be named after Philadelphia pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander.

Ingredients: Bombay Gin, Light Crème de Cacao, Half & Half

tom collins

TOM COLLINS

In 1876, the 1st recorded Tom Collins recipe is from the second edition of Jerry Thomas’ book, “The Bartender’s Guide”. It’s named after a hoax performed in the New York area in 1874.

Ingredients: Beefeater Gin, Simple Syrup, Lemon Juice, Soda

MIEL MILAGRO

In the “Café Royal Cocktail Book”, published in 1937, author William J. Tarling mentions a Picador. This cocktail was introduced 16 years before the first written reference to a Margarita.

Ingredients: Milagro Tequila, Lime Juice, Agave Nectar
